There's a long, drawn-out moment here, a moment that feels like much more than just a moment, where Adam feels anxiety spike up inside of him. It has nothing to do with Ronan and everything to do with Barry seeing Adam's truth. Adam doesn't open up to people. He doesn't let people really see him unless they matter. It's hard to maintain that shield when Adam's heart is laid so bare with Ronan here.
Barry isn't such a bad person, not really. He just isn't someone Adam would try to befriend. Barry parties a lot. Barry has no problem skipping classes and squandering his parent's money. Barry isn't a bad guy. He's just your average college student. Adam tries not to be average.
When Ronan seems to notice that Barry is not a threat, Adam relaxes a bit too.
At that cocky response from Ronan, Barry arches a brow and seems to look at Adam in a new light. Adam can't decide if Barry is confused about what a guy like Ronan is doing with a guy like him or if Barry has a newfound respect for Adam because of Ronan. Either way, Adam kind of wants to punch him in the face.
"You're telling me." Barry says to Ronan. "I mean we try to get him to go out all the time but he always stays in to study. We finally quit asking... mostly."
Barry turns on Adam and claps a hand on his shoulder. "But hey, man. There's another party at Sean's tonight if you wanna come and bring Ronan."
"Oh, I..." Adam shakes his head, hesitates, looks to Ronan. He could say he was studying, but with Ronan here that is obviously not going to be the case. He's lost his excuse for bowing out.
